Why We Love Them
Rykä’s Podflow EZ Walking Sneaker lives up to its name as an easy, supportive, and attractive walking shoe. Why We Love Them
The unisex design of Vivaia’s Urban Mesh Sneaker Sliders provides the ultimate versatility. During testing, we appreciated how the breathable mesh upper kept our feet cool, regardless of the distance we walked or the hours we spent wearing these shoes. They also felt supportive and stable on all terrains we traversed, including grass, wooded areas, sidewalks, and indoor spaces. We found them to be perfectly padded for daily comfort as well.
This shoe slips on seamlessly with the help of a well-designed heel tab while also maintaining the classic design of a traditional, laced sneaker. After we tied them for our first wear, we enjoyed their secure fit and the fact that the mesh upper didn’t stretch out after weeks of wear. The heel portion of the shoe could feel a little clunky at times, but we prefer that to shoes that feel too flimsy. With no signs of fraying or sole degradation, these sneakers are both durable and built to last.
Also available in men’s sizes at Amazon and Vivaia.
Potential Flaws
- These sneakers have a chunky, slightly heavy heel, which may not suit every person’s aesthetic.
- While we could slip these sneakers on easily, they still have laces, and we found the slick material of the laces also untied easily. We suggest double-knotting them before heading out.

We tested these shoes during sprint triathlon training and found that they provide the same excellent cushioning, stability, and breathability as their lace-up counterparts. The sneakers are also perfectly lightweight with plenty of cushion along the sole to support our legs and feet through longer runs.
Despite the slip-on design of these sneakers, the mesh upper stays tight and secure wear after wear, yet the opening is stretchy enough so they never get stuck on our feet. They feature a noticeably sturdy heel design, and the outsole provides sufficient traction for safely traversing concrete, unpaved trails, and gravel without slipping or sliding. Who They’re For
Best for those in need of a stable and supportive running shoe that can also handle the quick-paced demands of life outside of workouts.
Why We Love Them
Nike’s Pegasus EasyOn Sneaker was clearly designed with running in mind. This slip-on version of the brand’s best-selling shoe felt supportive and comfortable during testing, mile after mile, and no matter our pace. It’s very well cushioned throughout the foot, and the thick and soft padding around the entire collar kept our ankles both comfortable and stable. The shoes also provide solid arch support, and the heel feels sturdy on various terrains — a plus when we decide to take our runs off the road and into the park.
We appreciate how these shoes never feel too tight and don’t create pressure points while still offering a secure fit—a tough balance to strike in slip-on sneakers. Our feet, knees, and joints felt comfortable throughout every wear in the testing period. We also found the shoes easy to slip on and off hands-free, and we like how they feature an adjustable toggle that allows us to tighten or loosen the fit to our liking.
Also available in men's sizes at REI, Nordstrom, and Nike.
Potential Flaws
- We appreciate a little more responsiveness in long-distance running shoes than the Pegasus provides, but it’s still a solid choice for shorter mileage days.
- Many report that Nike sneakers tend to run small and narrow compared to other running shoe brands.
Most Valuable Insight
“They're incredibly easy to slip on hands-free and are a breeze to take off using your other foot to hold the heel. They're also breathable, super comfy, and supportive enough for all-day wear, runs, and long walks. Slip-On Sneakers We Also Tested
We tested 33 slip-on sneakers, but only 12 impressed us enough to make our final list of recommendations. Although we liked some of these slip-on sneakers’ features, they ultimately didn’t meet our rigorous testing requirements to be selected as top picks.
- Hoka's Hopara 2 Hiking Shoes were comfortable and provided adequate support for casual activities. However, they were difficult to slip on and off, and didn’t provide enough ankle support for activities like hiking.
- Kuru's Flux Sneakers deliver good cushioning and support, making them comfortable for long walks and various terrains. However, we had difficulty slipping into them, and we noticed that their ankle collars rubbed against our skin.
- Ryka's Echo Sky Slip-On Sneakers offer good traction, heel support, and stability, but they’re tight across the top and can be difficult to slip on. They also weren’t very comfortable for long periods, making them less suitable for extended wear.
- Kane's Revive Recovery Sandals are lightweight and water-resistant, so they’re a good option for the beach or other water-related activities. However, they lacked good arch support and shock absorption, so they’re unsuitable for long walks or all-day wear.
- Kizik’s Monaco Slip-On Sneakers offer a truly hands-free design, and the traction of their outsoles kept us feeling stable across various surfaces. However, the heels of the shoes fit too loosely, causing our heels to lift slightly out of the shoes when walking, which created some discomfort.
- No Bull’s Allday Ripstop Sneakers are a high-quality, gym-friendly shoe option with plenty of cloud-like cushion and grippy traction. However, they aren’t true slip-ons, and they’re slightly too wide for average feet, which negatively impacts their overall fit.
- On Running’s Cloudmonster Void Sneakers are stylish with nice cushioning, soft collar padding, and a stable feel. However, the toe box design creates uncomfortable pressure on the big toes, and the heels collapse when we try to slip them on hands-free.
- On Running’s Cloudnova 2 Sneakers are a well-made, durable, and comfortable option for those who spend long days on their feet, but they definitely don’t slip on without unlacing them first, and the heels tend to collapse when putting them on.

What to Look for When Shopping for Slip-On Sneakers
- Intended Purpose: Consider whether you’re planning to wear your slip-on sneakers for walking, running, or more for casual wear. If you’re just wearing them around the house, you won’t need as much cushioning, support, and traction as you would if running in them. Examine the tread or sole of the shoe to ensure it offers enough grip and stability for your activities, says podiatrist Gretchen A. Lawrence, DPM.
- Sizing: Slip-on sneakers should be sized appropriately for your feet and foot type since loose-fitting shoes can cause trips and falls, and tight shoes can cause circulation and wound problems, says orthopedic surgeon Christopher Hayes, MD, MS. While slip-on shoes are difficult to adjust due to their lack of laces, some models come in narrow or wide widths to help you find a shoe that fits your foot shape and size. Your toes should have room to wiggle, and your heel should feel locked in and secure, not sliding back and forth or up and down.
- Materials: Choosing slip-on sneakers made of high-quality, durable materials, such as rubber for the outsole, will improve your overall comfort and help reduce your risk of injury. If you plan to run or walk in them for long periods, look for shoes made with breathable materials that can help control moisture and odor. Uppers made of knit, mesh, leather, and wool will feel soft and smooth, helping to prevent chafing.

How We Tested the Slip-On Sneakers
To find the best slip-on sneakers, we tested 33 options from top, trusted footwear brands in our Lab and at home, wearing them on walks, at the gym, and during our daily routines. When testing slip-on sneakers, we evaluate each pair based on the following key criteria.
- Fit: First, we try on each pair to assess for any initial discomfort. As we walk and run in each shoe, we pay close attention to its fit, ensuring no rubbing, irritation, or discomfort. We also consider whether the upper is flexible enough for a custom-like fit. We prioritize shoes that have a snug fit and generally run true to size.
- Comfort: As we continue to wear each shoe, we consider factors such as cushioning, arch support, and overall feel. We pay attention to how comfortable the shoe remains over extended periods of wear, particularly during various activities such as walking, running, cross-training, and more.
- Support: During testing, we assess how the sneakers make our feet, knees, and joints feel after walking or standing for extended periods. Does the heel of the shoe feel like it offers support and stability? Or does it feel too flimsy due to the shoe's slip-on function?
- Stability: Stability is crucial for preventing excessive foot movement and maintaining proper alignment during physical activities. We assess the stability of each shoe by examining its construction, midsole support, and outsole traction to determine how well it keeps our feet secure and balanced, especially on uneven terrain or during lateral movements.
- Durability: At the end of the testing period, we inspect the shoes for signs of wear, including frayed seams, loose stitching, stains, or sole degradation. How does the material of the sneakers, including the upper and outsole, withstand repeated use and exposure to various conditions? We also note whether the shoes have stretched out from repeatedly slipping them on and off.
- Quality: We also consider our overall impression of the craftsmanship and quality of the slip-on sneakers as we wear them. How do they compare to other sneakers we’ve worn in terms of materials, construction, and attention to detail?
- Value: Once testing is complete, we check the price of each shoe to determine its value score. Considering all the other key categories we tested, we evaluate whether the shoe justifies its listed price. We prioritize shoes that we believe accurately match their price point and are ones we would confidently recommend to a friend.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are slip-on sneakers good for walking?
Slip-on sneakers can be suitable for walking depending on their design and support features. Look for options with adequate arch support and cushioning to ensure comfort and stability during extended walks, says Lawrence.
Do slip-on shoes have good arch support?
Similar to traditional lace-up sneakers, slip-on shoes offer a range of arch support options. Some may lack sufficient support, while others feature deep heel cups and robust arch support, says Hayes. If you rely on custom orthotics or inserts for proper arch support, look for slip-on shoes with removable insoles or sufficient depth to accommodate them.
What slip-on sneakers do podiatrists recommend?
Spielfogel recommends slip-on sneakers that feature cushioning both at the heel and forefoot to absorb shock and prevent fatigue. He also lists comfort, fit, breathability, and arch support as important for walking or prolonged standing. Trusted brands include Hoka, APL, Brooks, Rykä, and Kizik.
What kind of socks should I wear with slip-on shoes?
Ultimately, it depends on the specific shoe and how your feet feel in it. We tested Vionic’s Sage RX Sneaker, Hoka’s Restore TC Sneaker, and APL’s TechLoom Traveler Shoe without socks for comfort and breathability, but we preferred wearing thin or cushioned socks with Nike’s Pegasus EasyOn Shoe and Rykä’s Podflow EZ Sneaker.
