Who It's For

Best for recreational players of all skill levels who want a reliable, budget-friendly basketball.

Why We Love It

We found Wilson's NBA Authentic Outdoor Basketball offers good control, great grip, and three available sizes, making it a versatile option for beginners and advanced players alike. It features a proprietary cover that adds a layer of cushion to the ball. We really enjoyed the comfortable, firm but forgiving feel of this ball. It also features an inflation retention lining that keeps air from seeping out.

The cover has a nice tacky feeling to it. It isn't too smooth or too rough. Even our sweaty hands were able to maintain grip and control while dribbling, passing, and shooting. Once the ball was properly inflated, we found it had a good, responsive bounce. And we noticed very minimal wear and tear, even after regular play on rough, outdoor surfaces. We think this ball is a great value for the quality you get.

Potential Flaws

  • During our test, we initially overinflated this ball and it had a really intense bounce that was hard to control. However, once we let a little air out, the ball became very responsive and consistent.

Most Valuable Insight

"The grip on this ball is fantastic. It's very easy to maintain grip while dribbling, passing, and shooting. I didn't feel any adverse effect of sweaty hands, and I was definitely sweaty the whole test period (this summer has been HOT)." —Cait K., Verywell Fit product tester

Pros
  • Consistent bounce across various surfaces

  • Available in 14 color options

  • Soft feel prevents hand fatigue

Cons
  • May not be as durable as other options

Who It's For

Best for casual players looking for a reliable ball at a budget-friendly price point.

Why We Love It

Spalding's Street Outdoor Basketball is budget-friendly and available in 18 color options and four sizes, including a mini ball, making it a great choice for casual outdoor play. During our test games and shooting practice, we found it easy to palm the ball, which made catching and controlling it almost effortless. The texture feels tacky and grippy even when using it with sweaty hands.

This basketball never lost any air during play, and we also didn't notice any hand fatigue, thanks to its soft feel. The soft feel didn't diminish its bounce, though. The bounce was impressive and consistent across various surfaces when dribbling. And we like that it arrives already inflated and game-ready so we can hit the court right away.

Potential Flaws

  • The texture and grip on this ball started to fade and deteriorate during our month of testing, so longterm durability may be an issue.

Most Valuable Insight

"The ball didn't require any breaking in and had nice tackiness to help with improved ball handling and shooting. It does a good job of wicking sweat during play, as I never noticed a significant lack of grip after a long period of outdoor shooting." —Jimmy V., Verywell Fit product tester

Pros
  • Texture doesn't hold onto dirt

  • Recessed valve for added durability

  • Dries quickly when wet

Cons
  • Large logo creates an inconsistent feel

Key Specs

Use: Indoor-outdoor | Diameter: 28.5 or 29.5 inches | Materials: Composite microfiber | Our Overall Rating: 4.9/5

Who It's For

Best for beginners and casual players who practice and play indoors and outdoors.

Why We Love It

If you typically play basketball indoors but want the flexibility of practicing outside too, we recommend Baden's Elite Game Basketball. We loved its versatility and beginner-friendliness. Its pronounced texture felt very grippy, contributing to a secure feeling for anyone just learning to pass and shoot. We also loved how well it bounced outside on concrete without needing a lot of force, and it was easy to control the ball while practicing.

When we used the ball outdoors on concrete surfaces, it performed beautifully with no visible wear and tear, and the texture didn't hold onto dirt. We also noted that the air valve is recessed and protected from being struck by rocks or having debris stuck in it. The ball dries quickly when it gets wet and remains tacky even when our hands are sweaty. For indoor and outdoor play, this versatile ball is a great value.

Potential Flaws

  • During testing, we noted that the very large logo creates a hard spot on the ball that is a different texture and gets slick when wet. We would prefer a smaller logo for a more consistent feel.

Most Valuable Insight

"It felt very responsive. I found this ball much easier to control as a beginner. My husband was also pleasantly surprised by how well it responded during both indoor and outdoor play." —Anja V., Verywell Fit product tester

Pros
  • Soft, forgiving feel

  • Great for all sized hands

  • Deep channels provide excellent grip

Cons
  • May break down quickly outdoors

Key Specs

Use: Indoor | Diameter: 29.5 inches | Materials: Rubber, synthetic leather | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Who It's For

Best for beginner to advanced players for casual, competitive play on indoor courts.

Why We Love It

To perfect your layups and three-pointers on indoor courts, we recommend Nike's Elite Championship Basketball for its excellent grip and soft feel. We really like the texture of this ball, and the grip made controlling it easy for large and small hands. The soft, forgiving feel made the ball comfortable to grab and easy to dribble and catch.

The deep channels and textured logo create a consistent feel to the ball, which helps with shooting. We also appreciate that we can play with this basketball for a long time without experiencing any hand fatigue or irritation. While the ball is a little too bouncy outdoors, we found the bounce to be the same every time on indoor wooden floors.

Potential Flaws

  • This ball is perfect for indoor use but we noted it started to lose it's integrity when we used it outdoors, and it needed to have more air added after an outdoor game.

Most Valuable Insight

"It has a very nice grip and texture. I have small hands, and it had a very soft material, but it was easy to maneuver, catch, and hold." —Samantha N., Verywell Fit product tester

Pros
  • Consistent bounce on various surfaces

  • Budget-friendly

  • Very durable

Cons
  • Not available in larger sizes

Key Specs

Use: Indoor-outdoor | Diameter: 27.5 inches | Materials: Rubber | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Who It's For

Best for kids and beginner players who need a durable basketball to learn with and practice fundamentals.

Why We Love It

Spalding's Rookie Gear Indoor/Outdoor Youth Basketball is a natural choice for young players new to the game. It's lightweight, easy to use, and very budget-friendly. During testing, we found that the smaller size and 15% lighter weight of this ball made it extremely easy for small hands to grip and control, building confidence while learning fundamentals such as dribbling and shooting. The bounce is consistent—we used it on pavement and wood floor and noticed no difference.

This ball felt great on catch and shoot plays and was easy to control while dribbling, cutting, and rebounding. We also love its good durability. We didn't need to add air at all during our test, and the ball was left outside overnight and still looked and performed great. We like its budget-friendly price point and fun, colorful design. Plus, it's versatile enough to be used indoors or outdoors.

Potential Flaws

  • We think this is such a versatile and budget-friendly basketball that we wish it were offered in larger sizes for bigger kids.

Pros
  • Very soft, cushioned feel

  • Available in seven logo colors

  • Well balanced and retains air well

Cons
  • Not suitable for outdoor play

Who It's For

Best for indoor players of all skill levels looking for a durable, comfortable ball with excellent control.

Why We Love It

If you play basketball exclusively on indoor courts, Wilson's Evolution Game Basketball is our top pick for comfortable control on wood and indoor gym floors. This ball has been a favorite of one of our testers for many years, and we can see why. The microfiber composite cover is soft and cushioned, while still being grippy enough for excellent control. The texture covers the entire ball, including the channels, creating a consistent feel that's easy to handle.

Once properly inflated, the ball is well-balanced and retains air really well. Sweaty hands didn't affect performance at all, and cleaning was accomplished with a simple wipe-down, if needed. The soft feel made it easy for us to play with this ball for long sessions. We also appreciate that it's available in seven different logo colors, allowing you to customize it to your liking.

Most Valuable Insight

"I really loved the soft-touch leather. It's high quality and feels good even on my injured hand, but it's still sturdy enough to withstand long play sessions." —Anja V., Verywell Fit product tester

Pros
  • Responsive grip and control

  • Moisture-wicking

  • Official ball of NCAA March Madness

Cons
  • May need inflation upon arrival

Key Specs

Use: Indoor | Diameter: 28.5 or 29.5 inches | Materials: Composite leather | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Why We Love It

For boosting confidence and perfecting your game, we recommend Wilson's NCAA Evo NXT Game Basketball. It's the official ball of NCAA March Madness, and the grip and feel were a standout feature during our testing. Featuring a soft core that generates more spin with less effort, this ball helped make our shots more consistent. And the grip and control were second to none, feeling highly responsive while dribbling, passing, and shooting.

It has a nice, consistent bounce without feeling too firm or stiff. The ball maintains air pressure well and arrived game-ready. The orange color of the ball is brighter than most other basketballs, allowing for easy visibility on the court. We loved everything about this ball and feel it screams "performance."

Cons
  • Doesn't come inflated

Key Specs

Who It's For

Best for casual and recreational players that play exclusively on outdoor courts.

Why We Love It

If your primary playing surface is concrete or asphalt, Wilson's WNBA Authentic Outdoor Basketball is durable enough to last through hours of games and shooting practice. It features an extra layer of cushion under the cover for increased grip in all weather conditions. And the textured surface is just tacky enough to allow for a firm hold on the ball without being too rough. We had no issues controlling the ball when shooting and rebounding, thanks to its excellent grip.

The package includes a pump that makes inflating the ball quick and easy. We were able to have it fully inflated and ready to play in about 30 seconds. And the multi-color design makes the ball very visible. Other than some mild dirt accumulation, which is typical for outdoor play, this ball held up beautifully during our test period, showing no wear and tear or scuff marks.

Potential Flaws

  • This ball doesn't arrive game-ready, however, there is a pump included that inflates the ball very quickly.

Most Valuable Insight

"The ball was very consistent and responsive with dribbling, shooting, and rebounding. It was easy to control and didn't bounce away at weird angles or bounce too hard." —Jennifer Z., Verywell Fit product tester

Basketballs We Also Tested

We tested nine basketballs in total, but only eight impressed us enough to be included on our final list of recommendations. The following basketball had some features worth mentioning, but ultimately didn't meet our rigorous testing requirements.

  • Champion Sports' Pro Style Basketball is budget-friendly and has a consistent grip that is unaffected by sweaty hands. However, the tackiness of the surface didn't allow for easy release of the ball, and we experienced hand fatigue during play due to the ball's heavier weight.

What to Look for When Shopping for Basketballs

  • Diameter: The size of the basketball you need will depend on the age and skill level of the player. When choosing a basketball for a child just starting, opt for a small ball about 27.5 inches in diameter. For adults, the most common sizes are 27.5, 28.5, and 29.5 inches in diameter. Men’s collegiate and NBA players use a 29.5-inch ball, while the standard size for women’s collegiate and WNBA play is 28.5 inches.
  • Materials: The outer cover of most basketballs is either rubber or composite leather. Rubber balls are lighter and more durable, making them better for outdoor use, says basketball coach Greg Kot. Leather balls are the usual choice for indoor balls, he adds. Consider how you will use the ball most before choosing a material.
  • Indoor vs. Outdoor: Not all basketballs are made for the same purpose. Balls designed exclusively for indoor use are usually made with real or composite leather and are softer and less durable. Balls made for outdoor use are typically made of rubber and are more durable to handle concrete, dirt, and various weather conditions. Outdoor basketballs are often versatile enough to also be used indoors. But indoor balls are usually not durable enough for outdoor use.

How We Tested the Best Basketballs

To find the best basketballs, we spoke with basketball coaches to learn what to look for. Then we tested nine options from top brands while shooting, passing, and dribbling at home. When testing basketballs, we evaluate each one based on the following key criteria.

  • Grip: Finding a ball with a good grip is essential for developing strength, accuracy, and proper form during passing and shooting, says basketball coach Keith Miniscalco. We evaluate the grip of each ball by noting if it feels tacky, smooth, rough, or slick in our hands. While dribbling and shooting with the ball, we determine if the grip is easy to maintain. We also note if the grip changes with sweaty or wet hands.
  • Bounce: The bounce is determined by the inflation level and the amount of force a player exerts, says Miniscalco, adding that bounce consistency is important for control. To assess the bounce of each ball, we first note the type of surface we're testing on. We then note if the ball bounces flat or is too bouncy. Is the ball responsive? Does it bounce consistently? Is it easy to control?
  • Comfort: A comfortable ball makes it easy to play for a long time. We evaluate the comfort of each ball by noting if we can use it for long sessions of 30 minutes or more without experiencing hand fatigue. We also assess if the ball feels soft and forgiving, or stiff and firm.
  • Durability: After multiple uses over several weeks with the ball, we check for any general wear and tear. Is there any peeling or fading? Does the ball show scuff marks, gouges, scratches, or cracks? Does it retain air, or does it need to be re-inflated often? We prioritize balls that hold up well and will last a long time.
  • Value: To determine the value of each basketball, we wait until the end of the testing period to check the price. Do we think the basketball is fairly priced based on its performance? Would we only buy this basketball if it were on sale? We also consider whether we'd recommend the basketball to friends and family.
